ADEA defines a successful dentist in a number of ways—one of which is a leader. To graduate future cohorts of leaders in dentistry it is essential to examine how pre-doctoral dental schools approach, teach, and assess leadership knowledge and skills. The focus of this session is to broadly explore cogitative, behavioral, and environmental factors associated with dental student leadership training through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory, describe dental student learning preferences for leadership training, and examine how the the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry integrates leadership development throughout their predoctoral curricula.

Learning Objectives:

Outline dental students’ leadership development through the application of Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory of behavior change.
List examples of dental student leadership development activities, assessment modalities, and opportunities for students to practice leadership skills with peers.
Describe how the UNC Adams School of Dentistry approaches and integrates leadership development across their pre-doctoral curriculum.
