What makes a great leader? Are leadership skills innate or can we learn to lead? This session is for dental educators who ask why should we include leadership training in our curriculum. Santa Fe Group members will explain major leadership theories and the genetic and developmental influences on great leaders. You will explore methods and approaches to develop leadership training in the dental curriculum to prepare students for effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, teamwork, conflict resolution, and self-reflection. You will learn how these leadership skills can be acquired and enhanced through the facilitation of faculty mentors and practical experience.

Identify qualities or traits that lend themselves to effective leadership that can be acquired and honed through education, training and practical experience.
Describe methods and approaches in dental education in which leadership skills can be taught and developed.
Demonstrate self-reflection and introspection to facilitate personal growth as a leader.
